Cozy Shouldn’t Be Costly: October Fire Safety for Your Home

A pumpkin glowing on the porch. A fall candle on the counter. A space heater warming the room on a chilly evening.

October brings plenty of reasons to make your home feel cozy. Before you add the finishing touches, take a closer look at where your decorations sit—and what’s heating the space around them.

At Kwik Dry we help families recover from fire and smoke damage. We also want to help you protect the home and memories you’ve worked hard to build.

Give Your Fall Decorations Some Breathing Room

Dried cornstalks, paper decorations, and fabric accents belong away from flames, heaters, and hot light bulbs. Before plugging in your display, check whether anything could fall, shift, or blow toward a heat source.

For jack-o’-lanterns, choose battery-operated candles or flashlights. You still get the welcoming glow without an open flame near costumes, children, or porch decorations.

Keep decorations out of doorways and walking paths, too. Your seasonal display should leave everyone plenty of room to move safely.

Enjoy the Scent Without Forgetting the Flame

Fall candles can make a room feel inviting, but they need attention every time you light them.

Place candles in sturdy holders and keep them at least 12 inches from anything that can burn. Blow them out before leaving the room or going to sleep, and keep them away from children and pets.

Look beyond what’s directly beside the candle. A curtain, hanging towel, or decoration above it deserves attention, too.

Battery-operated candles are an easy way to enjoy the glow without worrying about an open flame.

Make Room for the Space Heater

A chilly evening can make a portable heater tempting. Before switching it on, make sure it has a safe place to operate.

Keep it at least three feet from furniture, bedding, curtains, and other items that can burn. Place it on a solid, flat surface, and check the cord and plug for damage.

Always plug a space heater directly into a wall outlet—never an extension cord or power strip. Turn it off when you leave the room or go to bed.

That includes the heater you bring out “just for a little while.”

Check the Fireplace Before the First Cozy Night

Before lighting your first fire of the season, arrange a professional chimney inspection and cleaning. Heating equipment also needs annual professional attention.

Use a fireplace screen to help contain sparks, and keep decorations, blankets, and furniture safely away from the heat.

A decorated mantel may look beautiful, but hanging fabric and seasonal accents need to stay clear of the fireplace opening.

Afterward, allow ashes to cool and place them in a covered metal container outdoors, at least 10 feet from your home and other buildings. Never put fireplace ashes directly into a trash can.

Make Safety Part of Your October Routine

Before guests arrive, walk through your home and look at it with fresh eyes.

Are candles close to decorations? Has a blanket slipped beside the heater? Is anything blocking an exit?

Take a few minutes to move things into safer positions. Those small choices help keep the focus where it belongs: family, friends, and enjoying the season.
