Why Your Next Relationship Could Be More Valuable Than Your Next Customer
When people ask me how Kwik Dry Restoration & Remodeling became what it is today, they often expect me to talk about equipment, marketing, certifications, or years of experience.
Those things certainly matter.
But if I'm being truthful, two moments shaped my business more than anything else.
One came from a book.
The other came from a person.
And both completely changed the direction of my life.
The Book That Changed My Thinking

Years ago, I read the BNI book Money on the Table.
It wasn't simply a book about networking.
It was about something much deeper.
It taught me that lasting businesses aren't built on transactions.
They're built on trust.
It challenged me to think differently about referrals, relationships, and serving people before expecting anything in return.
Looking back, I can see that the principles in that book became part of the culture we try to build every day at Kwik Dry.
Our goal has never been simply to restore buildings.
Our goal is to restore trust.
The Person Who Changed My Business
Around 2010, I met an insurance adjuster named Tim Hicks.
Over time we became friends.
He generously shared what he had learned from years in the insurance restoration industry.
He taught me how insurance companies think.
He explained the claims process.
He helped me understand what adjusters need to properly document a loss.
Most importantly, he taught me how to become a better partner instead of simply another contractor.
That friendship changed everything.
Before meeting Tim, I was essentially a one-man carpet cleaning business.
Today, Kwik Dry has grown into a full-service restoration and remodeling company serving homeowners and businesses throughout Southwest Missouri.
Sometimes one relationship changes everything.
Success Is Built Through People
One of my favorite quotes comes from Charlie "Tremendous" Jones:
"You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read."
I've watched that quote prove itself over and over again.
Every great opportunity in my career can be traced back to a relationship.
Someone believed in me.
Someone shared knowledge.
Someone opened a door.
Someone made an introduction.
Business isn't built alone.
It's built together.
Relationships Matter in Restoration Too
The restoration industry is about far more than drying buildings or rebuilding homes.
When disaster strikes, homeowners are often overwhelmed.
They don't just need equipment.
They need someone they can trust.
That trust doesn't happen because of a fancy truck or expensive tools.
It happens because of relationships.
Relationships with customers.
Relationships with insurance professionals.
Relationships with plumbers, roofers, HVAC companies, electricians, and countless other professionals who serve the same community.
Every relationship strengthens our ability to serve people well.
Why We Believe in Giving First
One of the values we've embraced over the years is simple:
Give First.
Whether through BNI, community involvement, or simply helping another business owner solve a problem, we've learned that generosity has a remarkable way of coming back around.
Sometimes it comes back as a referral.
Sometimes it comes back as a friendship.
Sometimes it comes back years later in ways you never expected.
The point isn't keeping score.
The point is creating value.
Your Next Opportunity May Already Exist
Many business owners spend their time looking for the next customer.
I've found it's often better to look for the next relationship.
The next mentor.
The next employee.
The next referral partner.
The next person you can help.
Because one introduction may change a business.
One conversation may change a career.
One friendship may change a life.
It certainly changed mine.
Final Thoughts
We restore homes every day.
But the business itself was built through relationships.
A book changed the way I thought.
A friend changed the way I worked.
Thousands of customers have trusted us because of relationships built over many years.
That's a reminder I never want to forget.
Invest in people.
Keep learning.
Give before you receive.
You never know which relationship will become the turning point in your story.
