Wet LVP Flooring: Can It Be Dried or Must It Be Removed?

Luxury vinyl plank flooring, commonly called LVP, is popular because it is durable, attractive, and often advertised as waterproof.

But does that mean your floor is protected when a broken pipe, overflowing appliance, or other water loss sends water underneath it?

Not necessarily.

The surface of LVP may resist water, but that does not make the entire flooring system waterproof. Water can travel through seams, around walls, beneath baseboards, and under the flooring. Once it becomes trapped, it may affect the underlayment and subfloor without leaving obvious signs on the surface.

So, can wet LVP flooring be dried, or does it have to be removed?

The honest answer is: it depends on what is beneath the flooring, how much water entered, how long it remained, and whether the water was contaminated.

“Waterproof Flooring” Does Not Mean a Waterproof Floor

Many types of luxury vinyl plank are made from materials that do not absorb water the way hardwood or laminate flooring can. That is why manufacturers may describe the individual planks as waterproof.

However, an installed floor contains more than vinyl planks. The complete flooring system may include:

  • Seams and locking joints

  • Attached padding

  • Separate underlayment

  • Adhesive

  • Plywood or oriented strand board subfloor

  • Concrete

  • Baseboards and wall materials

The planks themselves may survive a water loss while moisture remains trapped underneath them.

That hidden moisture is the real concern.

How Does Water Get Under LVP Flooring?

Water naturally follows the easiest available path. During a water loss, it can enter beneath vinyl flooring through:

  • Joints between planks

  • Edges of the room

  • Doorways and transitions

  • Floor vents

  • Gaps around cabinets

  • Holes around plumbing fixtures

  • Areas where baseboards meet the floor

Water can also travel farther than expected. The visible wet area may represent only a portion of the affected flooring.

A floor might feel dry when you walk across it while the padding, underlayment, or wood subfloor remains wet underneath.

Signs That Water May Be Trapped Beneath LVP

Water under vinyl plank flooring is not always visible. Possible warning signs include:

  • Water coming through the seams when the floor is stepped on

  • Bubbling, lifting, or separating planks

  • Changes in color around flooring edges

  • A musty or unusual odor

  • Swollen baseboards or trim

  • Soft areas in the subfloor

  • Increased indoor humidity

  • Moisture readings above normal dry levels

The absence of these signs does not guarantee that the area underneath the floor is dry. Professional moisture testing may be needed to determine how far the water traveled.

Can Wet LVP Flooring Be Saved?

In some situations, the planks may be reusable. That possibility depends on several factors.

The source of the water

Water from a clean supply line is very different from water originating from a sewage backup, toilet overflow containing contaminants, or groundwater intrusion.

When contaminated water enters beneath the flooring, porous materials and attached padding may not be safe to save. Cleaning and removal decisions should be based on the source and condition of the water—not appearance alone.

The type of installation

Floating LVP is installed differently from glue-down flooring.

Some floating planks can be carefully lifted to expose the wet materials beneath them. However, locking edges may break during removal, especially if the flooring has aged or was tightly installed.

Glue-down LVP presents different challenges because water may affect the adhesive and loosen the bond between the flooring and substrate.

The condition of the planks

LVP may need to be replaced if it has:

  • Warped or curled

  • Separated at the joints

  • Sustained damaged locking edges

  • Developed staining or discoloration

  • Lost its bond to the floor

  • Been exposed to contaminated water

Manufacturer instructions and warranty requirements should also be considered before reinstalling any flooring.

The materials underneath it

Even if the vinyl planks appear undamaged, the materials beneath them may not be dry.

Attached padding or separate underlayment can hold moisture against the subfloor. Wood-based subfloor materials can swell, weaken, or develop microbial growth when they remain wet.

Saving the visible flooring is not a successful outcome if moisture is left trapped beneath it.

Why Moisture Testing Matters

Looking at the surface is not enough to determine whether a flooring system is dry.

Restoration professionals may use moisture meters, moisture mapping, thermal imaging, and carefully selected inspection points to evaluate the affected area. Readings should be compared with dry materials in an unaffected area of the home.

This helps answer important questions:

  • How far did the water travel?

  • Is the underlayment wet?

  • Has moisture reached the subfloor?

  • Are nearby walls, cabinets, or insulation affected?

  • Is the structure drying properly?

  • Have materials returned to an acceptable drying goal?

Moisture documentation provides more reliable information than guessing based on how the floor looks or feels.

Can You Dry Under LVP Without Removing It?

There is no single answer for every home.

Specialized drying methods may work in certain circumstances, depending on the construction, water source, amount of moisture, and flooring system. In other cases, portions of the floor must be lifted or removed so the underlayment and subfloor can be properly inspected and dried.

The goal should not be to remove everything automatically—or to save everything at any cost.

The right goal is to preserve materials when it is safe and practical while making sure hidden moisture and contamination are not left behind.

When Should LVP Flooring Be Removed?

Removal may be necessary when:

  • Contaminated water entered beneath the floor

  • Wet padding or underlayment cannot be adequately dried

  • The floor is buckled, warped, or separated

  • Locking joints have been damaged

  • Adhesive has failed

  • The subfloor cannot be accessed or dried effectively

  • Moisture has remained trapped for an extended period

  • Manufacturer requirements prevent safe reinstallation

Sometimes only part of the floor is affected. However, matching discontinued patterns, colors, or plank sizes can influence whether a partial repair is practical.

What Should You Do After Water Reaches Your LVP?

If you discover water on or underneath luxury vinyl plank flooring:

  1. Stop the source of water if it is safe to do so.

  2. Avoid walking through water near electrical outlets or appliances.

  3. Take photographs and videos of the affected rooms.

  4. Move vulnerable belongings away from the wet area when possible.

  5. Do not assume the floor is dry because the surface looks normal.

  6. Contact a qualified water-damage restoration company promptly.

  7. Keep damaged materials until your restoration and insurance professionals have documented them.

Avoid prying up planks without understanding how the floor was installed. Improper removal can damage locking edges and turn potentially reusable flooring into unusable material.

Acting Quickly Can Protect More Than the Flooring

Water damage often spreads beyond the area where it was first discovered. Moisture beneath LVP may also reach:

  • Drywall

  • Baseboards

  • Cabinets

  • Insulation

  • Wall framing

  • Adjacent rooms

  • Lower floors or crawl spaces

Prompt inspection and professional drying can reduce secondary damage and provide a clearer record of what was affected.

The Bottom Line

Luxury vinyl plank may resist water, but water can still become trapped beneath the floor.

Whether wet LVP can be saved depends on the water source, installation method, flooring condition, underlayment, subfloor, exposure time, and manufacturer requirements. The decision should be based on inspection and moisture documentation—not assumptions.
